Five Minute Look at This Book, Episode 06

The Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit

Remember, this is not a review. I couldn’t possibly do this great work by Jurgen Moltmann justice in five minutes. However, I can respond to a couple of things that struck me in this book.

I enjoy Moltmann’s emphasis on naming where the church is versus what the church is. His affirming the idea in the Barmen Declaration that “The church is present where…” yet expanding it from only the proclamation of the word, to the work of the Spirit in participation with Jesus. For me, this is a helpful and forward (even eschatological) description. However, I wonder if Moltmann doesn’t go a little too far in saying we cannot name what the church is. I wrestle a bit with that in this video. Do I miss Moltmann’s point? Misunderstand the context from which he was doing theology? Perhaps. What do you think? Help me out.
